Leadership

Nick worries so that his clients don’t have to. He’s driven to see the client succeed in every way – not just in the strict terms of the given brief.

As well as providing governance and a strategic eye for our firm as Partner, Nick’s work is usually focussed on ensuring client organisations get the funding they need to do their important work – whether through government funding or charges and levies on third parties.

In working with his clients, Nick makes sure they’re always told what they need to hear, when they need to hear it. He’s concerned to see that our firm always has the right connections and relationships with clients so that there’s space and opportunity for us to ask the right questions and give honest, informed answers.

Examples of Nick's work

Nick works mainly in these three speciality areas:

  • Developing successful business cases, drawing on the Better Business Case framework – for example, for Queenstown Lakes District Council for government funding to invest in infrastructure, and the business cases to establish the new central water regulator Taumata Arowai and for the redevelopment of Canterbury Museum’s buildings
  • Reviewing public-sector agencies and functions to improve performance – for example, assessing whether the Environmental Protection Authority is using its existing funding in the most efficient and effective way and identifying a forward-looking, sustainable funding track for the EPA, and reviewing MBIE’s corporate, governance, and information group
  • Advising central and local government on funding arrangements, including on the best mix of government and third-party funding – for example, advising councils on how they charge for the use of public spaces for commercial purposes, and helping regulators set their fees and charges so they get the right amount of third-party funding to pay for their regulatory activities.
